On Saturday, November 1, Tiger Martial Arts in Scotts Valley is hosting a martial arts tournament and the proceeds benefit The Core. The Core is a Christ-centered mentorship program for kids on the east side of Santa Cruz.
The schedule will be as follows:
10:00 am - Forms Competition
12:00 pm - Tae Kwon Do Olympic Sparring
Entry fees are as follows: $25 for one event and $35 for both before Oct. 18th and $35 for one event and $45 for both after the 18th.
Forms are stylized series of martial arts techniques that are scripted to be done in a certain order and in a certain manner. They are taught to students to improve balance and coordination, and to give students practice combining techniques in a smooth flowing pattern. Most people find forms to be one of the more beautiful aspects of martial arts training, as they resemble an intricate dance composed of martial arts techniques.
Kickboxing and karate will lend themselves to our tournament in two ways: most karate styles have forms (for the forms competition) and both karate and kickboxing have sparring, which is simply fighting with pads and rules. So, yes, there will be events appropriate for both karate and kickboxing students to come and share their arts with everyone.
The tournament will be held in Scotts Valley. The address is 208 Mount Hermon Road, Scotts Valley, 95066. The phone number is 831.461.9322.
Greg from Tiger says, “We were recently named as one of the fastest growing schools in the country by Educational Funding Company, and we’d of course like to continue that trend by becoming more involved and visible in the community. We’d like to start with our involvement with The Core.”
