St. Francis Catholic Kitchen was founded by Father Peter Carota. Peter Carota was a former real-estate salesman. In 1981, he sold his own home and used the money to start St. Francis Catholic Soup Kitchen. In the beginning, they fed the poor from the back of a van. In 1983, Peter and some of the other volunteers were able to purchase the current property at 205 Mora which is right behind the San Lorenzo Lumber on River Street. Peter also started a shelter at 132 Lennox Street - Jesus, Mary, Joseph Home. Peter has since become a priest, but his work at the Soup Kitchen and Jesus, Mary, Joseph Home is being carried on by a group of dedicated volunteers. - St. Vincent DePaul Society
